Why is laparoscopic splenectomy done?

Laparoscopic splenectomy is a minimally invasive surgery done to remove a damaged or a diseased spleen.

How is laparoscopic splenectomy done?

• Several small incisions are made in the abdomen to insert the camera attached laparoscope and other laparoscopic tools.
• Carbon dioxide gas is inflated into the abdominal cavity to provide room to work.
• Parts of the spleen are freed from surrounding tissue and blood vessels to the stomach and spleen are, tied off or clipped with metal clips and divided.
• The spleen is then dissected free of its attachments in the abdominal cavity and is placed in a special surgical plastic bag, may be broken up if very large and removed through one of the small abdominal incisions.
• Finally the carbon dioxide gas is removed and the small incisions are closed.
