Sub Total Thyroidectomy
Why is subtotal thyroidectomy done?
It is a surgery done to completely remove the abnormal side of the thyroid gland, the isthmus (the part connecting the two thyroid lobes) and the majority of the opposite thyroid lobe.
How is sub total thyroidectomy done?
- A neck incision of about 4-5 inches length is made in the lower part of the central neck region.
- The part of the thyroid which contains the problem is removed and the incision is sutured.
Alternatively the procedure can also be done through minimally invasive techniques of surgery.
