What is LASIK and why is it done?

Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) is an eye surgery done to correct vision for a wide range of vision problems such as

• Myopia
• Hypermetropia
• Astigamatism
• Presbyopia

by using a laser that reshapes the cornea in order to increase the focusing power. Vision problems arise due to change in the shape of the cornea leading to poor focusing of light by the eye, resulting in blurred or distorted vision

How is LASIK done?

• The eye is numbed by placing an eye drop in it.
• The surgeon now uses a special device called a micrkeratome to cut a layer of thin corneal tissue in the cornea, which is lifted and folded back on its hinge.
• The exposed tissue underneath is dried and the laser is used to vaporize a portion of it.
• The flap is put back in position which adheres to the eyeball soon after.
• At the end of the procedure a shield is placed over the eye to protect the flap till it heals completely
